Articolul analizează materialele arhivei personale a remarcabilului cercetător al Africii de Vest, arheologul și etnograful Iu. Shumovsky de origine ucraineană. Materialele au fost transmite de Iu. Shumovsky în Ucraina în 1995 și sunt stocate în fondurile Rezervației istorice și culturale de stat Dubno. Arhiva conține materiale legate de credințele și ritualurile religioase ale triburilor din Africa de Vest (în special popoarele din Dahomey, Benin, Mali, Nigeria și Guineea), în special: magia în general și instituția magicienilor, ritualurile de maternitate (despre primele minute din viața unui copil; cordonul ombilical; cadouri pentru o femeie în travaliu și un nou-născut, tradiția unei femei care părăsește casa pentru prima dată după naștere etc.), ritualuri funerare (gropari; masa de pomenire și deplângerea mortului); cultul plantelor (arborii „susu”, „sere” și „baobab”; floarea „kola kola”), fructe și animale (în primul rând șerpii „davun” și „nazha”), elemente (ritualuri asociate cu spiritele apei), despre credințe în viața de apoi a sufletului și viața de dincolo, ritualul circumciziei pentru bărbați și femei. Materialele de arhivă revizuite prezintă un interes semnificativ atât pentru studiul activității științifice a lui Yu. Shumovsky, cât și pentru etnografia Africii de Vest.

В статье проанализированы материалы личного архива выдающегося исследователя Западной Африки, археолога и этнографа Ю. Шумовского – украинца по происхождению. Материалы были переданы Ю. Шумовским на Украину в 1995 г., и хранятся в фондах Государственного историко-культурного заповедника г. Дубно. В архиве содержатся материалы, относящиеся к религиозным верованиям и обрядам племен Западной Африки (особенно народов Дагомеи, Бенина, Мали, Нигерии и Гвинеи), в частности: к магии в целом и институту магов, родильной обрядности (первые минуты жизни ребенка; пуповина; подарки для роженицы и новорожденного ребенка; традиция первого выхода женщины из дома после родов и др.), похоронной обрядности (гробокопатели; трапеза и оплакивание покойника), культу растений (деревья «сусу», «сере» и «баобаб»; цветок «колу колу»), плодов и животных (прежде всего змеи – «давун» и «нажа»), стихий (ритуалы, связанные с духами воды), к верованиям в загробное существование души и потустороннюю жизнь, обряду обрезания у мужчин и женщин. Рассмотренные архивные материалы представляют существенный интерес как для изучения научной деятельности Ю. Шумовского, так и для этнографии Западной Африки.

The article analyzes the materials of the personal archive of the outstanding researcher of West Africa, archaeologist and ethnographer Y. Shumovsky, a Ukrainian by origin. The materials were transferred by Yu. Shumovsky to Ukraine in 1995 and are stored in the funds of the State Historical and Cultural Reserve of the city Dubno. The archive contains materials related to the religious beliefs and rituals of the tribes of West Africa (especially the peoples of Dahomey, Benin, Mali, Nigeria and Guinea), in particular, about: magic in general and the institution of magicians, maternity rituals (the first minutes of a child’s life; the umbilical cord; gifts for a woman in labor and the newborn baby; the tradition of the first exit of a woman from the house after childbirth, etc.) funeral rituals (the diggers; the meal and the mourning for the dead); the cult of plants (trees “susu”, “sere” and “baobab”; the flower “kolu kolu”), the fruits and animals (primarily snakes – “davun” and “nazha”), the elements (rituals associated with the spirits of water), the beliefs in the afterlife of the soul and the afterlife, the rite of circumcision for men and women. The reviewed archival materials are of significant interest both for the study of the scientific activity of Yu. Shumovsky and for the ethnography of West Africa.
