The world has never been as rich as it is today, yet over one billion people suffer from extreme poverty. This phenomenon has a devastating impact on the protection of the basic human rights. Poverty cannot be banished without the realization of human rights. It is a cause and a product of human rights violations. The poor cannot enjoy their rights to education, health and housing because they cannot afford them. Eradicating poverty must be our first goal in this new millennium.
