Background and aim. Epicardial adipose tissue thickness (EATT) is suggested as a new cardiometabolic risk factor. We investigated the the relationship of EATT with anthropometric, metabolic, cardiac morphofunctional and early indicators of atherosclerosis in children with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Materials and methods. Participants consisted of 145 children aged 10-18 years. Th e diagnosis of MetS was established according to the International Diabetes Federation criteria (IDF, 2007). Respondents were examined through transthoracic echocardiography. Th e Scientifi c Research Ethics Commission approved the study protocol, all participants gave informed consent of participation. Results. According to the IDF criteria, MetS was confi rmed in 36.55%, and non-MetS – 63.45%. Th e EATT was also increased in patients with MetS compared to non-MetS (5.39±0.22 mm vs 4.97±0.17 mm; p> 0.05). EATT was positively correlated with weight, body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2), BMI-SDS, waist circumference, uric acid, left ventricular mass, interventricular septum, left ventricle posterior wall thickness in the MetS group (p> 0.05). Conclusion. Th e fi ndings of the present study demonstrate a close relationship of EATT with early cardiac dysfunction inchildren with MS. Assessment of EATT in routine echocardiographic examinations is suggested as a feasible and reliable method for the evaluation of obesity with MS and its related cardiovascular risks in children. |
