Rezumat | |||||||
The Republic of Moldova has long been considered as an „exemplary pupil” among all post-Soviet states that support friendly relations with the EU. Western-oriented elites were in the majority. Relations with Russia were characterized from the perspective of pragmatism. Foreign policy factors, such as the Ukrainian crisis and the growing confrontation between the West and the East, as well as internal political instability (banking scandal and the strong polarization in society) led to the fact that Moldova can be rather called a „problem child” today. Three external forces, like Romania, Russia and the United States are fighting for influence in the country. Public peace is fragile. Protracted conflicts in the „pro-Western” and „pro-Russian” camp ahead of presidential elections are determined not by differences of party programs and vision for the future but by the personal struggle between politicians. |
