The present study is focused on the evolution of secular ancient painting in the Roman Empire, from its first manifestations to the beginning of Paleo-Christianism, regarded from the perspective of the role which is sometimes propagandistic. The four Pompeian styles were followed by the painting from the 2nd century A.D., marked
by the portraits from Al-Fayum, while from the late-ancient style, we have chosen only the the secular aspect, without insisting on the discussion regarding Christian works. The time of the Severs opens Late Antiquity and continues to be marked by the portraits from Al-Fayum, and also by the portraits of the imperial family; after that, the Constantinian period follows, during which propaganda interfered less directly, through symbolic references. |
