The article is devoted to the analysis of visual and verbal means that help represent different identities in the semantic field of death in the contemporary Balkan city, which includes tombstones and cemetery premises. I focused the research on the cities of Pristina and Prizren (Kosovo). The data were collected during fieldwork expeditions in 2010–2013. As a hypothesis I took the idea that the sacred space of death in the city landscape is more open to innovation tendencies (comparing to rural areas), and, due to this fact, current social processes are better reflected, thus certain means of identity representation are worked out. Historical cemeteries and those of ethnic and confessional minorities as sites of memory play an important role in constructing current cultural landscape and historical map of Kosovo. |
