The critical recovery of the political end cultural works of Constantin Stere, depict a fascinating evolution of his political persona – his journey from socialism to liberalism to populism. A young Russophile who became a Germanophile in the years before The First World War. He distanced himself from Popular Socialism growing fonder of the ideals of national liberalism, which promoted empowering and emancipation of the masses and the democratization of the society as a whole. The environment what shaped Constantin Stere’s personality and views was ambiguous to say the least. He was deeply influenced by the Russian Imperialist politics and went seeking a more liberal environment in the Romanian Kingdom. He establishes there hoping to find the perfect environment - open to development and modernization. Yet the reality proved to be quite different. His deportation - granted by the Tsarist police impeded his future political career in the country. For the rest of his life he’ll be treated as a stranger in the Romanian society. On top of everything there was also the painful dissension between him, the intellectual Bessarabian society and the Popular Party. This painful break up from the heart of the Bessarabian nationalist democratic movement was deeply felt yet despite his political misfortunes he remained a fierce fighter for radical reforms and the modernization of society what militated for a new Democratic Romania. |
