During the first half of the 20th century, Chisinau’s Jewish population was estimated at more than 50% of all residents. his demographic and anthropological phenomenon was felt in every walk of the city’s life and had an impact on its urban planning. Many residential buildings and public institutions of the Jewish community, including medical, educational, commercial and industrial enterprises, have been conserved. However, of the 77 pre-war synagogues and Jewish prayer halls that existed, holding a special place in Chisinau ‘s architecture, only seven buildings remain today. Hence the city’s diverse “Jewish places” have become an integral part of one indivisible urban space, testifying to the community’s signiicant contributions to the totality of Chisinau’s urban environment. |
