Michael Sturdza was neither just an instrument of Russian policy in the Principalities, nor a governor of a simple Russian guberniya he administrated. Nor was he treated from this position. Russia had created sufficient means, especially through Russian consuls and the Intelligence Service to be able to exercise control over the
Principalities. Prince Mihail Sturdza knew how to handle tactfully the support of the Protective Power to create his political ascendancy in Moldova, counting from the beginning on the capitulations with the Porte. Close cooperation with Tsarist authorities since the aftermath of the revolution led by Tudor Vladimirescu, services to Russia in the war against the Ottoman Empire in the years 1828-1829, personal contribution to the development of the Organic Regulation represented sufficient evidence for the Protective Power on the loyalty of Mihail Sturdza to the Court of St. Petersburg. Thanks to its qualities as a diplomat, Mihail Sturdza stood on the throne of Moldavia
for 15 years. Revolution of 1848-1849 was fatal to him, grievances against him multiplied, he was dismissed and had to leave Bessarabia |
