Rezumat

The Great Famine in Soviet Union, which peaked in 1931-1933, has coincided with one of the most dramatic episodes of the refuge from Ukraine to Romania in the interwar period. Considering that the tragedy was concealed and denied by the Soviet regime, the present study gives a synthesis and an interpretation of the testimonies of the refugees who managed to save themselves to the right bank of the Dniester - as they were presented in the Romanian and Russian language press of the time. The testimonies of the survivors confirm the organized character of the famine, the use of starvation as a political instrument in the Sovietization process of the peasantry masses hostile to the regime. These testimonies also reveal the role of the famine in the general context of the un-nationalization of the Romanians in Transnistria, as well as the impeccable level of information the public opinion in Romania had about the dramatic realities in the neighboring country.
