According to the 1930 Bessarabia census the Bulgarians lived preponderant in the southern part of the province as follows: in the Cetatea Albă district (70.891 – 20,9%), Ismail district (46.467 – 19,2%), Cahul district (28.175 – 14,5%) and Tighina district (18.503 – 6,4%). The Police from Cetatea Albă, Ismail, Chilia, Tighina and Cahul watched attentively the activities from this community because some of them carried on irredentist activities. Also, it was found that especially those with a precarious situation expressed hostility towards Romanian State. The Bulgarian Consul to Galaţi often visited the southern part of Bessarabia and reported the Bulgarian discontents to the Government from Sofia. All these were
written in a statement of the Bulgarian Government which was given to the Romanian Government but they were invalidated by the General Olimpiu Stavrat, Governor of Bessarabia. |
