Since 1812, when the Russian Impire occupied the Eastern part of Moldovan state, named by the occupants Bessarabia, a battle began for this territory between the international actors (Otoman, Austrian and Russian impires), as well as within the bessarabian territory – for a geopolitical orientation. This battle contiues even now in the independent Republic of Moldova: there are parties which promote the integration within the Eurassian Economic Union, proposed by Russia, and there are parties which promote the integration in the European Union. The external factor is very influential in a small state like Republic of Moldova. So the denouement of this struggle is still unknown and it depends on the internal democratic mechanism and on the external suport for both groups of political forces.
