The scholarly article under review is a comprehensive examination of the significant role played by Soviet propaganda in facilitating territorial annexations undertaken by the USSR between 1939 and 1940. The author critically analyzes the use of propaganda in indoctrinating the populace and justifying aggressive foreign policies. The discussion is timely, given the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine. The book under review, written by Daniela Șișcanu, is based on her doctoral thesis and fills an historiographic gap by investigating the phenomenon of Soviet propaganda used in the annexation of Romanian territories. The author employs a rich variety of previously unexplored archival materials from Moldova and Romania and demonstrates convincingly the critical role of Soviet propaganda in promoting USSR’s expansionist foreign policy during 1939-1940. |
