After the presidential election in 2020, won by Maia Sandu, the representative of the political right, a strong confrontation broke out in the Republic of Moldova between the new president and the majority socialist group in Parliament, supported by his occasional allies. The election of a president of another political colour led to the fall of the Chicu government. Maia Sandu initiated negotiations for the formation of a new government. This was the moment when the Republic of Moldova entered a political crisis that would last more than half a year, because Maia Sandu wanted to nominate either a minority government, formed by her party, or summoned up early elections, objectives that the Socialists rejected from the start. After two failed attempts to form a new government, led by the president’s people, the way was opened for early elections. Moreover, the Socialists came into conflict with the Constitutional Court, after it declared the decisions adopted by them unconstitutional, trying to dismiss its president and replace him with a person they trusted. This maneuver was considered an attempt by the Socialists to usurp power in the state. The Constitutional Court rejected all unconstitutional approaches of the Socialists and gave to the President the opportunity to hold early parliamentary elections, in order to change the Parliament and the power in the Republic of Moldova. The political crisis ended on July 11, 2021, when the presidential party won the elections by a landslide and gained an absolute majority in the new Parliament. |
