The mesenchymal tissue remodeling is crucial in wide variety of developmental and
physiological processes. The mesenchymal stroma also plays a key role in the development of different grades of epithelial neoplasia. The present study was perfomed by histochemical analyses and immunostaining of the tissue samples from 34 patients with koilocitosis, displasia, carcinoma in situ and invasive carcinoma of the uterine cervix in order to determine stromal modifications during the progression of the malignant processes. Collagen, an essential component of extracellular matrix, gradually increased in the deepest areas of the subepithelial stroma in cases of koilocitosis, mild displasia and decreased in the most cases of carcinoma in situ. Elastin fibers gradually disappeared during the progression of neoplastic process. The concentration of reticulin fibers gradually increased during this progression. A rich capillary network interfaced with the epithelium at the stromal-epithelial junction in displasia and the vessels obtained enlarged sinusoid aspects in some carcinoma in situ and invasive carcinoma. |
