Rezumat

Due to its geographical position, at the western border of the Russian Empire, Bessarabia was under the scrutiny of tsarist authorities. However, there were certain events that escaped the attention of the Russian authorities, returning to them only later. A conclusive example of this is the case of Philiki Hetaeria’s letters in southern Bessarabia, which Soviet researchers have misinterpreted as evidence of the Greek movement’s involvement in organizing Freemasonry in Bessarabia. Based on terms taken out of context and a surface research, it was considered that the first Masonic lodge in Chisinau, Ovidiu, had been established in 1821 with the contribution of Philiki Hetaeria. But an overall research of the case file, kept in the Moscow Historical-Military Archive, gives us all the details to understand the context of those documents and especially the positioning on the timeline of events. Even though the Masonic lodge Ovidiu was established in Chisinau when Philiki Hetaeria was planning his actions, many of the leaders of the movement being in Chisinau at certain intervals, Freemasonry had nothing to do with the plans of the Greek movement. This fact is demonstrated in the present material, based on the original archival documents.
