This article traces in detail, for the first time, the history of repainting and the restoration of icons of the iconostasis of the Trinity Cathedral (the Trinity Sergius Lavra), created around 1425 by Andrey Rublev, the monk Daniel, and their pupils. It is based on numerous, previously unpublished archival documents, visual analysis of painting, and the results of technological studies conducted in 1990 and 2000. The icons were repainted in 1635, 1777-1778, and 1834 – doing damage to the original; a small restoration was done in 1860 and 1904-1905. The most damaging were works of the 17th century; the subsequent repainting was done over the existing layers. The so-called academic restoration of the icons begun in 1918, and it continued intermittently until 1948: in the late 1918 - early 1920, by restorers from the All-Russian Committee for Restoration of Old Artworks; in 1924-1931, by the restorer N.A. Baranov; in 1940-1941, under the lead of the Moscow restorer I.I. Suslov, aided by brothers I.A. and N.A. Baranov; in 1944-1946, by N.A. Baranov. A fairly high level of scientific restoration was conducted only during 1940-1941. The icons of the Trinity Cathedral iconostasis require a complete scientific and archeological uncovering, following their comprehensive scholarly study. These icons do not belong to the Church or even Russia, but to the whole world, and if the lack of culture, honesty, and political will of authorities, breadth of outlook, civic responsibility, and courage of the clergy prevents to accomplish the needed tasks, it is better to leave the icons in their current state – beneath thick layers of grime, oil varnish, and repainting – and under current conditions, since, as time has shown, they can exist in such conditions for a long time. |
