The last decade of the century which ended not long ago was very difficult for our
country as well – „the republic- sister” separated from the immense empire – the Soviet
Union. The activity of the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet in that period actually
constituted an exam for survival, of difficult trials which proved till the end that the
theatrical art (and not only) is capable of overcoming any economical difficulties if this art
is genuine, of valour and professional. There weren’t many stagings done in this period. But the staging of some older plays was overtaken. Many young soloists appeared in various roles who got public recognition and love in a short time. It was important the fact that many impresarios from abroad liked the new plays („Nabucco”, „Bohema”, „Rigoletto”, „Aida”, Lucia de Lammermoor”). The theatre started to travel to more countries, being appreciated even by a „spoilt” public. The International Festival „Maria Biesu invites You” has had an important role in the maitainance of the Theatre in a certain artistic form.
