Becoming a member of the Council of Europe in 1995, Republic of Moldova has begun to align its legislative framework at European level, including the cross-border cooperation. The article highlights the most important aspects of the European legislative framework, in terms of legal regulations of the Council of Europe and European Union as the main European institutions which promote cross-border cooperation, achievements and objectives of Moldova to adjust its legislative framework to European standards. Cross-border cooperation is a particularly important area for strengthening relations with neighboring states, depending largely on legal mechanisms and political will of national and local euthorities. Improving the legal framework and the relations with neighboring countries will contribute to a better use of EU financial assistance under the European Neighborhood Policy focused on cross-border impact projects, which would support the European integration process of Moldova. |
