We assert the meagreness of an attempt to analyse Camil Petrescu’s work, especially his novels, only in terms of Marcel Proust’s, André Gide’s, Stendhal’s influence and that of other foreign writers, or as consequence of an arhitypal reading-grill. Although, generally speaking, the attempts to associate literature with a mythical source are notorious, modern people continue to transcende the historic moment in order to run into mythic time. For that purpose, we identify
and we suggest Don Quijote arhitypal field which can be concluded in Camil Petrescu’s novels. Both the author and his character Ladima are arhitypal doubles of Cervantes’ hero. They all wish to reestablish man’s primary, absolute state by rooting out madness or bluntness which lead the institutions and the human actions. Like Don Quijote, Camil Petrescu’s character is an European citizen, presented as a model, and who is under the sign of reason, conscious
discussion and quest of truth. Furthermore, both characters are incapable to correctly interpret the reality and they do relate only with a self-achievement through an ideal love. Every ugly or hideous thing in their proximity is rejected. Not lastly, Camil Petrescu’s characters and Cervantes’ hero attest the tragic axiom: heroism stands for the simple believer. |
