The Russian Federation officially signed many international and bilateral (Russian-Ukrainian) documents recognizing the independent state of Ukraine and its borders. In spite of the solemn commitments to respect the realities, the Kremlin annexed Crimea (2014) and launched a large-scale war of annexation of Ukraine – a founding state of the UN. The Russian leadership invoked the “historical right” over the Ukrainian territories, a “right” that is rejected by the international community. In the 21st century, relations between peoples can (and must) be based on the strict observance of treaties and international law |
