Several studies have revealed that nurses and teachers are professions with higher risk to development of mental health disorders, namely depression and occupational stress. Mood disorders and occupational stress have also been associated with impaired of executive cognitive function, which allow us to solve novel problems, planning and generating strategies for complex actions. All these skills are important to purposeful and goal-directed behavior as determinants dimensions in successful work performance. The aim of this study was to verify the integrity of these cognitive abilities among emotionally and mentally demanding jobs, such as nurses and teachers. With a sample of 93 nurses (mean age 40.3 years, 30 % male and 70% female) and 100 teachers (mean age 38.9 years, 30% male and 70 % female), it was administered the Halstead Category Test (neuropsychological measure that assess multiple domains of non-verbal abstract reasoning) and the Tower of Hanoi, (neuropsychological measure that assess the abilities of problem-solving and planning). The analysis of the results, showed that nurses have a higher impairment of abstract reasoning (t (9.28) = 1.98; p =.048) and planning (t (1.48) = 4.86; p =.00). |
