This paper aims to present a comprehensive and complete analysis of the separatist movements from the ex-Soviet space, especially in the Republic of Moldova. The paper focuses on presenting both the national and international context immediately after the fall of the USSR, as well as the factors that determined the apparition of the separatist movements. Multiple causes and effects are paired and presented to expose the chronology that followed the unfolding of those historical events. The paper is split into three main topics: the Transnistrian conflict and its consequences, the Georgian conflict and its aftermath, and the ongoing conflicts between Armenia and Azerbaijan. One of the most important aspects discussed is regarding the understanding of Russia’s foreign policy and how it contributed to an accumulation of tensions in the former USSR in the quest to consolidate its position of power in the region. The causes that led to the Transnistrian conflict, as well as the narrative of the situation and the current stalemate are provided. The Georgian conflict highlights the path from tensions to violence and ultimately a war between the Georgian government and Southern Ossetia, as well as the Russian invasion in 2008. The last topic approached in this paper analyses the tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, presenting the source of the conflict, the evolution of the tensions during the USSR and the transition towards the violent wars of the post-soviet era. The involvement of foreign countries is shown, such as the support of Turkey and Russia accordingly in the 2020 war – the strategic implications for the balance of power in the region are addressed, showcasing the consequences of the war both for Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as for the other countries in the region. Therefore, the interest of the Russian Federation to maintain a very strong sphere of influence over the region is shown – Russia adopts an aggressive foreign policy by trying to intimidate the ex-Soviet states and to isolate those countries from western initiatives. |
