The responsibility for a haughty survival of a nation is laid on the elites, the intellectuals who must be the engine. Paul Goma, the writer who exiled to Paris 33 years ago, is the only Romanian intellectual after 1945, who was able to serve the truth, even endangering his own family, without expecting any medals, awards, or compensations. Paul Goma considers himself a writer. The fact that he is named a dissident is unbearable for him. He considers himself a free person, able to say the truth unaltered by restrictions. The “quality” of a dissident, being mentioned ostentatiously, has cast shade on that of a writer. At the same time, the writer polemizes with what was called “resistance through culture”. Paul Goma hasn’t only written novels and journals, but also fundamental texts which should be at last discovered by our intellectuals. He is more than an exciting writer; he is more a re-constructor of the Romanian language.
