The restructuring of the banking system is a necessity of utmost importance in the context of European integration. Over the first 17 years of transition to the market economy, one may say that the Moldavian banking system was highly supervised by the National Bank of Moldova. The article “Administrative Sanctions applied by the National Bank of Moldova against Commercial Banks” reveals the characteristic features of the transition period, namely the quantitative development of the Moldavian banking system, its relative degree of concentration and segmentation, the structural and qualitative development of the activities of most banks, etc. The Moldavian banking system is still underdeveloped, but more advanced than the other economic sectors. In our opinion, for the next period the restructuring and development are necessary both as regards the increase in the supervision process and administrative regulations, sanctions against commercial banks and as to the qualitative issues, those concerning the improvement of the operational structures and the upgrade of activities, the implementation of modern products and services able to bring advantages to both the banks and their clients.
