Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is becoming recognized as a clinical entity with a variety of presentations distinct from those of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Damage to laryngeal mucosa may be the result of refl ux of gastroduodenal contents, whether chronic or a single incident. The most common presenting symptoms of LPR include hoarseness, sore throat, throat clearing, and chronic cough. Aim: To evaluate the role of laryngopharyngeal reflux as a risk factor of the vocal cords benign lesions. The study included 120 patients with benign laryngeal pathology, who underwent diagnostic test for ambulatory 24-hour double probe pH monitoring. The patients filled out a standardized questionnaire and were examined laryngoscopically. Seventy percent (55/78) of patients undergoing pH testing had abnormal studies. Thus the highest incidence of reflux was found in patients with vocal cord neoplastic lesions (88%) and patients with muscle tension dysphonia (70%). LPR is a relatively common problem that appears to be common in patients with laryngeal pathology, either by maintaining and / or progression of the disease process |
