Cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates in the Republic of Moldova are very high and cervical cancer accounts for about 40% of all female cancers. Effective cervical screening programs can prevent up to 80% of cervical cancers, but reductions of this magnitude will not be seen unless all the component services, including screening procedures conducted at the primary healthcare level, cervical cytology and colposcopy – are all of the highest quality. Thus, high-quality colposcopy is an essential component of a safe, effective and cost-efficient cervical screening program. In this article are presented the algorithms of colposcopic management depending on cytological result, as well as indications for referral to colposcopical examination. Thus, the main indications for colposcopy are: repeated low grade cytological abnormalities (ASC-US, LSIL), high grade abnormalities (HSIL, ASC-H), glandular abnormalities, as well as clinical indications (clinically suspicious cervix, symptomatic patients, especially with postcoital bleeding). |
