Hepatic cirrhosis represents the final stage of many chronic liver diseases. This disease has a leading role in the morbidity of the population from Republic of Moldova. According to the World Health Organization reports, during the last 20 years, the mortality from hepatic cirrhosis is in a continous rise. The Republic of Moldova occupies 3rd place in mortality rates from liver cirrhosis among other causes of death. Patients with hepatic cirrhosis, develop bacterial infections in 23-34%, one-fourth of which lead to patients’ letality. The most frequent infectious complication in patients with hepatic cirrhosis is spontaneous bacterial peritonitis which represents one-third of all bacterial infections. Moreover, bacterial infections represent a frequent cause of repeated hospitalizations, low quality of life and increasing costs of medical services in patients who suffer from liver cirrhosis. The article constitutes a review concerning the key etiological moments, clinical and laboratory criteria, pathogenetic mechanisms and prognosis of hepatic cirrhosis complicated with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis |
