THE GEORGIAN PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS OF 2012 This article analyzes the parliamentary elections in Georgia, which took place on October 1, 2012. The elections were held under the new electoral code. In total 150 members of Parliament were elected for a term of 4 years. Meanwhile, 73 deputies were elected by the majority system in single member constituencies, and 77 - by a proportional system based on party lists. Till two types of voting were registered 16 and 14 parties, respectively. It should be noted that 19 parties have been denied in registration. The campaign was unfolded in the context of the bitter struggle between the two main political forces in the country. This was ruling United National Movement and the opposition coalition Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia. The actual leader of the „Georgian Dream” Bidzina Ivanishvili said the desire to achieve change of power exclusively through peaceful means. OSCE observers described the election campaign as polarized, and coverage of the campaign by non-state media as biased, and state media - as a weighted. |
