From the beginning of the Second World War, the Hungarian political elite was getting more clearly aware of the community in aspirations of the USSR and Hungary, aimed at the dismemberment of the Romanian state. Soviet campaign for annexation of Bessarabia in June 1940 set a precedent, by using which Horthists could begin to implement their own irredentist plans towards Romania. In early July, the Soviet Union in the course of bilateral contacts supported the Hungarian claims on Transylvania. The rise in popularity of the USSR in Hungary was a challenge for Germany. Berlin has made a response move, setting by the Second Vienna Award on August 30, 1940, the balance of powers in the Danube-Carpathian Basin in the interests of Nazi Germany |
