In the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts (RGADA) are stored multiple copies of documents from the State Archives in Vienna. A document from this collection describes Cantemir’s secret visit of 16 (27) May 1715 to the Austrian resident, O. Pleier. At this meeting Cantemir had outlined his dissatisfaction with the financial situation, he was having in Russia, and expressed a desire to obtain Habsburg Empire’s protectorate for Moldova and, in case of war against the Turks, to leave Russia and become a vassal of the Habsburgs. In this article is shown the contents of this document in
German and Russian, and is also given the Romanian translation. |
