Rezumat

As an instrument of the propaganda, the Soviet mass-media were to play an important role in mobilizing the masses against the alleged internal and external threats. Given the beginning of the Cold War, almost immediately after the end of WWII, the image of the new “external enemy” had been used very often by the Soviet propaganda machine in order to ensure community cohesion and support for the Soviet foreign policy. The regional newspapers, considered to be the closest to mainstream reader, were called upon to contribute to the raising of the political consciousness of the inhabitants of the villages, towns and district centers, in both, domestic and international matters. In an attempt to get a better idea of the contribution of the local newspapers from the Moldavian SSR in supporting the USSR foreign policy aims, this paper has analyzed the news on a very important and extremely sensitive for the Soviet foreign policy international event of the time – the Hungarian uprising of 1956 – on the pages of Soroca district newspaper, “Steagul Rosu”. The author examined the news on the above-mentioned event through the way of interpreting, volume and periodicity criteria for the purpose of a better understanding of the methods and manipulation techniques used by the Soviet newspapers in order to deceive population’s perception of international events.
