Istoria cartofiliei basarabene cunoaște mai multe nume de editori, care la sf. sec. XIX - înc. sec. XX și-au îndreptat energia la tipărirea diferitor tipuri de ilustrate, inclusiv a celor topografice, lăsând astfel posterităţii imagini de epocă. Iar ca urmare cartea poștală ilustrată s-a transformat într-un document, care relatează despre evenimente, oameni, localităţi, fenomene și activităţi umane din trecutul nu prea îndepărtat, fiind o sursă suplimentară pentru cunoașterea istorică. Cărţile poștale ilustrate, tipărite de Alexander Wolkenberg, primul și cel mai fructuos editor cartofil din Basarabia, au existat pe piaţă de la 1896 până în 1917, satisfăcând cele mai ... gusturi. Astăzi constatăm că eforturile depuse – financiare, intelectuale, manageriale – de către A. Wolkenberg nu doar au pus temelia cartofiliei din spaţiul geografic dintre Prut și Nistru, astfel lăsând urmașilor un bogat material ilustrativ, ce vorbește despre viaţa reală a populaţiei basarabene de la sfârșitul secolului XIX – începutul secolului XX, ci a înscris o pagină reală în istoria Basarabiei.

The history of the Basarabian collections of postcards knows several names of editors who, at the end of the XIXth – begin. of the XXth c., put their energy in printing different kinds of postcards, also topographical ones, thus leaving to the posterity pictures of their time. As a consequence, the illustrated postcard has become a document that speaks about events, persons, localities, phenomena and human activities from the recent past, being an additional source of historical knowledge. The present paper discloses the activity of the first and most productive publisher and collector of postcards from Basarabia – Alexander Wolkenberg. The illustrated postcards printed by him circulated in the time span from 1896 until 1917, fulfilling the most elevated tastes. Due to his financial, intellectual, managerial efforts, A. Wolkenberg set the bases of postcards collection from the geographical space enclosed between rivers Prut and Nistru, leaving to the next generations a rich illustrated material that brings witness about the way of life of the population from Basarabia from the end of the XIXth century – beginning of the XXth century, and constitutes an important page in the history of Basarabia.
