French language learners in Anglophone West African countries find themselves in a non favorable linguistic environment for learning the language. In fact, the majority of French language teachers still use the traditional method that has proven ineffective in
enhancing the quality of learning. Hence, French language learners in these countries find it difficult to express themselves in French. The results of this study showed that none of the two visited universities has adopted a model or an approach for teaching French. This article proposes a task-based approach to teaching, for teachers to explore and exploit in class to help
their learners come out of the passive position the traditional methods put them in and dare to speak French, thereby taking their learning in their own hands. Finally, French language teachers should reconsider their current teaching methods to make them more compatible to ICTs - to meet the language needs of their learners. |
