The article is dedicated to one of the most complicated and politicized topics of the World War II period, the Katyn tragedy. According to the most wide-spread theory the sources of which date back to the main propagandist of Nazi Germany J. Goebbels, in the spring of 1940 Polish prisoners of war were massacred at the order of J. Stalin by his subordinates. This version was immediately supported by the Polish government-in-exile. In its turn, the Soviet party placed the responsibility for this crime with Germany. The debate between the supporters of the two versions of the Katyn events that arose in 1943 is still far from completion 70 years later. During the years each version has accumulated new facts and evidence. At the same time, there remain controversial questions without finding the answers to which it will be impossible to put an end to the scientific argument. This article outlines the most important of those questions addressed to the supporters of Goebbels-Polish version of the Katyn events. As was shrewdly pointed out by a well-known researcher of the Katyn case
Mr. V.N. Shved in his letter to the Polish director K. Zanussi “one good question is often worth a whole dissertation”. And there are dozens of those. |
