The beginning of the 9th century is marked by the aggravation of the Byzantine-Bulgarian contradictions against the background of the strengthening of the power of the Bulgarian Khaganate under the rule of Khagan Krum (803-814). Emperor Nikephoros I (802-811) responded to the military offensive of the Bulgarian Kagan with a vigorous counteroffensive aimed at final elimination of the danger posed by Bulgaria. The final stage of the counteroffensive initiated by the Byzantine ruler ended dramatically on July 26, 811 with a disaster for the emperor and imperial troops. The place of the battle, according to historians, could be the passes of Vărbitsa, Veselinovsky, Kotel, Riš (Beregava / Veregava) or Iskăr, as well as the Luda Kamčija gorge. We offer as a hypothesis two possible locations: a) in the area of Klisura, on the river of Stryama, known in ancient times as Syrmus; b) in the upper reaches of the Osăm River, in the area of Troyan or even at the Troyan Pass. |
